Question:

How can I check a gun on a Jetblue flight?

I've recently been told that different airlines have varying levels of paranoia when allowing travelers to check firearms. I flew on Delta a year ago, and was allowed to check a handgun inside a hard plastic case with a small lock on it (even though someone could have easily broken into the case by stomping on it or something). I'm wondering if Jetblue will allow me to do the same, or if I must check the gun inside a locked metal case. Any help would be nice! Also, I'm going to California, and I have a Glock 19 with hi-cap mags. Should I leave the mags home?

  1. Best to contact Jet Blue.  But, most carriers have the same policy.  The firearm must be declared and you state that it is unloaded, then placed in a hard side and locked carrier.

Carriers differ on ammo, some allow it and some do not.  A reasonable amount, check with Jet Blue, in sturdy wood, metal or fiber or original manufacturers packaging.

You gotta check with Jet Blue in advance.

  2. I'd leave the gun at the store where you lost your brain and bought it.

  3. First, the airlines don't make the policies concerning the transportation of firearms.  Those are federal regs.

The gun must be in a lockable case, unloaded.  Get a TSA lock.  When you check in, you must go to the counter with the gun in the case, and declare it to the agents there.  They in turn have some procedures to follow, like having TSA come over to inspect the gun, and make sure it's unloaded and properly secured for transport.  The case will then be locked and sealed, and it goes in with your checked luggage.  Not carry-on.

Leave the hi-cap mags at home, and bring the stock capacity mags.

  4. Well... You need to talk to the airline, only they can give you a clear answer because policies on security can change from day to day or even minute to minute.  Just don't try to take any ammo.

  5. i work for JetBlue... here's what they'll say (more or less) when you call in. It's copied right from our internal website.

    Traveling with a Firearm

No person may carry a weapon, either concealed or unconcealed, while onboard a JetBlue aircraft, except for a state, municipal, or county law enforcement officers on-duty status or a federal law enforcement officer traveling on or off-duty status. For additional requirements for law enforcement officers carrying firearms onboard the aircraft, please contact JetBlue  and a Reservations crewmember will assist you.

If checking a firearm, you must be at least 18 years of age. All firearms must be unloaded and declared by reading and signing the Firearms Unloaded Declaration tag before checking the container. The firearm must be packed in either a crush-proof container specifically designed for the firearm, or in a hard-sided container. The container must be lockable and only the individual checking the firearm retains the key or combination.

Since laws regarding the carrying of firearms vary, it is the responsibility of each customer carrying a firearm to know and adhere to all local requirements.  If you are traveling to or from JFK or LaGuardia in New York City, please check with local authorities for all requirements. Gun laws in New York vary by county.

A permit may be required even if one is not necessary in the city of residence.

  6. JetBlue's website is not very well laid out and a pain to find information on.

Here are links to the information you are looking for from the JetBlue website:

If you don't know, ask a librarian.

  7. you have to call ahead and let them know you are bringing it.  It MUST be in proper casing. and they'll want to know ahead of time so security knows you are enetering the airport and don't take you down on sight. lol.

It should be the same with jet Blue but make sure you call ahead!!!

  8. Maybe they'll let you stuff it in their $7 pillows

  9. Kinda defeats the purpose of taking a sidearm when you leave the magazines at home, don'cha think?

Check with Jetblue's policy concerning the transportation of firearms on their carrier.
