How can I check to see if a car has been stolen?

I am about to purchase a car I found via the auto trader web site, how can I verify that this car does belong to person selling it?

And Nav's reply is stupid -- if you did buy a stolen car you lose both the car and your money - if it's now the property of an insurance company they might sell it to you again, but you'd be paying twice for it.

call your local police station or if you have a friend thats a cop ask him to run the vin number
