How can I check up someone's education background?

On someone who claims he or she has graduated from a certain university? I hire English teachers and would like to be sure that their resumes are true. I tried google but it brings up too many results. I tried alumni pages but they dont give me a search option

In some cases, you can simply call the registrar of the university and ask for a degree verification.  In most of these cases, the university will require you to send a signed release of the applicant.  

There are a majority of universities that have outsourced their record verifications to a third party.  If you call the university, they might tell you to contact one of these third parties, in which case it can be conducted on-line for a fee.
