Question:

How can I clean mildew, rust and scum in the bathtub?

We bought a house recently and inherited a dirty tub - it's white ceramic and we cannot get rid of the mildew, rust and scum buildup in it.

I have tried Comet with Bleach, Tilex Mildew Remover and also CLR (Calcium, Lime and Rust). NOTHING works.

Any ideas or products you yourself have actually tried that worked for you??

  1. Find Heavy Duty "Zud" it's in a can like Comet and made to remove rust. You can also try Barkeepers Friend.

  2. I love scrub and bubbles!

  3. This may sound crazy to you as it did to me when I was first told

but try it and see if it does not ' miraculously ' work. I was amazed!

Get a brand NEW bottle of Hydro. Peroxide (don't know why but it

must be brand new!) and some dawn dish detergent though I am sure Joy or other brands will work also!) and pour onto

tub and use a scrub brush and apply it all over, leaving it coated. with this mixture combo.(oh! did I forget to say,

mix together while applying! You need the magic of the

    combination)

No need to scrub, just leave it for awhile, or overnight,

    then return to rinse and

see if it does not rinse all the stains away with it! Try it and see!

Also, Good Luck. Hope this helps you as it once did me!

  4. In Australia we have a product called Exit Mould try that. If you can't remove the stains you could get your bath resprayed -

    comes up like new!

  5. You may need to soak the buildup to dislodge it, especially if you have hard water where you live. In that case the buildup isn't soap scum but limestone - actual rock dissolved in the water.

Fill the tub almost to the top and add two large bottles of cheap white vinegar (any brand will do). Let sit for six hours. Rinse and see if any of it has moved (use your fingers to try to remove small pieces).

Hard water deposits can actually etch certain finishes, though; you might end up with a tub that needs refinishing. Good luck in any event.
