Question:

How can I clean my whiteboard better?

I'm a teacher and half of my whiteboard won't erase very well. When I try to use whiteboard cleaner or Windex, I still can't get the writing off. Can I use bleach? When I get it clean, is there something I can use to make the markers erase better?

  1. Someone recommends Mr Clean Magic Eraser:

I've never tried it on a white board, but it's worked miracles on other things.

There are some things you can do to limit the problem:

-some markers come off more easily than others (I found the low odor ones  were harder to erase)

-don't leave the writing on the board too long before erasing

  2. Methylated spirits.

  3. I use Formula 409 (though Jared's Law is making that practice questionable) and find that it does better than the stuff the whiteboard makers recommend.  Another thing, I have found that black Expo marker comes off a lot cleaner than any other color, especially when you clean the board regularly.  Don't leave writing on the board any longer than necessary as it tends to set.

Also, make sure the marker is a "dry erase" marker.  Permanent marker is just that.  It's possible to clean it off with nail polish remover, but it's a real nuisance to have to do that.

  4. i always use windex....i suppose try like 409. maybe that will work better.

  5. There are cleaners sold with some dry erase markers if not you can try to lightly wipe with rubbing alcohol but test area first  to see if it will mess up the board

  6. Windex should clean it unless it is full of scratches. Has anyone used markers on it that they shouldn't have?

I don't think I'd use bleach. Have you asked the maintenance person?

  7. I installed my own whiteboards seven years ago. Home depot - large boards I cut to size myself. Sometimes I have noticed that the cleaning crew uses a certain cleaning product that leaves a residue that causes that whiteboard to stop erasing correctly. If i pre-clean it, I have found it returns to a like new state.

I take 409 and use it 2 or three times, each time cleaning with a new paper towel. then I go over with whiteboard cleaner a few times. This has been pretty successful so far, all my boards still work great.

(i havent done it, but Ill bet simple soap and water would be the easiest.. think ill try it this new school year)

another poster also has a good suggestion - some markers are just bad. I always use expo.
