  2. put a few layers of aluminum foil in your kitchen sink (set the stopper first), add warm water and dissolve a few tablespoons of baking soda in the water.  set your silverware in the sink and watch the tarnish disappear.  

    then just wash quickly in warm water and dry with a soft cloth.

I have used any number of products available in the grocery or hardware store on my silver plate.  Some are harder on the finish then others.  Some are super efficient like Tarnex.  Pick one that best appeals to your style - wipes, dips, creams and polishes, etc.   Also, some are quite strong so read the labels well!  Consider checking with the product manufacturer for suggestions or take it to or call a local (not a chain) jeweler if you are dealing with vintage silverware. Ebay also has some interesting suggestions on cleaning silver plate, too.  Good luck!
