How can I compare which substance repels insect better?

We have an investigatory project in school, and my group is comparing which substance repels insect better? Now, i already have the sample substances, the problem is, I don't know how to compare it.. Please give me some ways on how I can compare them.

  1. Do one half of your body in one and the other half with the other kind then count which side has more bug bites at the end of the day?


  2. I would compare the amount of deet. The higher the amount, the more effective and probably more expensive.

  3. You have to conduct a "double bind" test.  Give some of the people substance A, some substance B, etc.  In a "double blind" test, the people doing the test don't know which is which.  Furthermore, the people actually doing the work of passing this stuff out don't know who has what (so that they can't accidentally tip anyone off).  You then measure bug bites afterwards.  The thing is, you need enough people to make the test relevant.  For example, my scent may be more attractive to bugs than yours, so you need enough people that that should average out.
