Question:

How can I concentrate in reading a book?

When I read books, the words just seem to go through my head. I just read the words, and nothing pops up in my imagination; in other words, I meaninglessly look at words with no benefit. How can I get myself to keep my concentration on the book?

Also... sometimes, I try to concentrate and I understand what's going on. However, when I reach the next sentence, I seem to have forgotten what happened in the previous sentence, and have the need to reread it again. It's getting quite irritating, as it takes awhile to assimilate one page.

I am pretty sure I don't have ADD or anything similar. And strangely, when it's on the computer, I have maximum concentration and never tend to do what I do when I read physical books. I am interested in the books I try to read and I really want to read them. Please help! Thanks.

I am 14 years old, by the way.

  1. Maybe your not enjoying the book that you are reading. If you are really interested in it , you would surely understand it.Try to read books that really interest you. That's the first step, not reading plainly to improve your skills. This is just a tip.

About the concentration. Try to listen to instrumental music, It calms your head and somehow help you imagine stuff. Like moonlight sonata, it keeps your head silent and helps you concentrate. I would also recommend Readers digest. A very fun book to read.

  2. Try listening to audio versions especially unabridged (not shortened - abridged) ones and read along with the story teller.  The Story teller, usually an actor or actress will do different voices and bring the book to life.

Abridged versions give you a broad outline of the book and miss out bits of it.

You can download books onto an ipod from audible.co.uk (audible.com) for a fee but you can download as many times as you want.  Check it out! You can also borrow them from the local library.

  3. Lock your self in a room w/ light and read the book.

  4. Yep, I have that a lot but that also says something about the book you're reading. It's because you think of other things while reading, and then forget what happened. Just try more interesting books and stay away from distractions like the TV.

  5. Try reading a paragraph, and

writing down what it meant to

you.  Make a game out of it.

    Reading will be more

    interesting, and you're

    motivated to pay attention.
