How can I connect a guitar to my computer?

For someone who's been playing guitar for a while, I'd like to start recording songs on my computer. However, I'd like to ask what kind of equipment I absolutely need and what is the best software program out there? I'd like to keep the price to a minimum but any suggestion is worth checking out. I appreciate all answers and thank you for your time.

There is already a sound recorder built into your computer. It's in all programs>accessories>entertainment. If that one is not good enough for what your doing, go to www.nch.com.au/recordpad/index.html. It is a professional recording program.

Now as for connecting it to your computer, you need an adapter that changes your guitar cord into a regular 3.5mm jack so that you can plug it into your mic input on your computer.
