  1. It sounds like you have a stepper motor.

  2. Star Delta.

  3. There should be a diagram or key right on the nameplate.

Failing that, you're probably looking at a 3 phase motor.

A continuity tester will help you pair up the two leads to each coil.

Make your Delta or Wye connections as required, and be prepared to check for proper rotation on start-up.

  4. Sounds like a 3 phase motor.

You could start by measuring the resistance of each wire relative to all others, and writing them up in a chart or spreadsheet.

This might give you some clues as to which windings are connected to what, which ones are for the armature, and which ones go to the stator.

  5. Two pairs are stator coils (field),one pair is rotor coil. Use a ohm meter to identify them........the resistance of 2 stator coils will be very close. As you measure it pair by pair,at the same time rotate the shaft. If you see the resistance has a small changes, this is the rotor coil. Because it connects to a pair of carbon brushes where touching the coil on and off.

How to connect.........for simple to explain, assuming 1-2 ,3-4 are field coils. 5-6 is rotor coil.  and this motor is working on 115v AC (read the name plate). To protect the motor being burn immediatelly if wrong connection is made, series the power 115v AC input with a 100 watts lamp before connect it to the motor under test. Now connect in this way.........

115v AC (hot).......to one side of a lamp 100 watts or more......

other side of lamp to............coil  winding 1............winding 2 to........winding 3..........winding 4........to winding 5........winding 6 to 115v AC neutal (return). If the lamp becomes very bright like a normal light , one of the coil polarity is connected in wrong way. Just reverse the connection of one of the coil, the lamp should be dimmer. Then bypass the lamp, apply full power, motor shall run.

I connect this motor into series motor. Of course you can connect it into shunt motor if you are sure the rotor coil can take 115v AC alone. Otherwise, rotor shall turn into smoke immediately. Have fun !!!
