Question:

How can I connect my PS3 to my surround system via the TV (a Toshiba)?

have finally purchased a HDMI TV (a Toshiba XV50) and a DVD with surround sound which works perfectly. I also have a PS3 which I would love to hear the sound through the surround speakers but I have no idea how to do this. Does anyone know how I can set this up?

Both the PS3 and DVD are connected via a HDMI cable.

Many thanks!

  1. if it is hooked up through hdmi then you should just need to switch the input on the tv to hdmi input. hopefully this helps

  2. First off, congrats on picking PS3 because it's amazingly powerful.

Secondly, I'd question why you have a DVD player AND a PS3 connected?   The PS3 is Bluray, and Bluray players upconvert all standard DVDs to "near HD quality".  That said, simplify your setup by using PS3 only!

Trust me, I've used a good DVD and then the PS3 for same movie and PS3 looked better on my 50".

As for the connections, use HDMI as suggested if possible.  To do this, connect the PS3's HDMI to an HDMI-equipted A/V receiver.  Select the source as DVD or GAME/TV depending on your receiver (I'd recommend an Onkyo 605 if you don't already have a high-current HDMI receiver).

-NOTE: some receivers like the Denon line below the 588 cannot get their audio through HDMI because they only do what's called HDMI Pass-through.  This means that the signal is untouched and just goes on to the TV (receiver is an expensive HDMI switchbox).

If your receiver doesn't handle HDMI, connect the PS3 using a high quality fiber-optic cable.  This will connect to any fairly-new receiver (last 5-10 years I'd bet, depending on quality and brand).  Once you do this, go into PS3 options and go to system settings.  Go to the audio options or HDMI options, I forget which one, and select the audio output to Fiber Optic (instead of HDMI).  This will then allow you to select output formats you wish to use (2-channel, 5-channel, bitrates, etc).  Then you're set up to play.  Don't forget this will eliminate audio through the HDMI so the TV will get no audio at all.   Any questions, let us know!

    Good luck
