Question:

How can I continue in life?

I am 18, 19 in June. I quit College in January 2007, when I was 17. I have since then been unemployed and out of education, with no money income, just borrowing from parents.

I'm trying to find work, but I live in a very quiet place in the UK, a rural area, where it's a 40 minute DRIVE to the closest big town (where most jobs are). I do not have a car, or anyone that can drive me there in the mornings for potential work.

I'm now taking on board the possibility that I won't ever find work here.

How then can I continue life? I need money to progress, but can't get money.

I can't rejoin College because I will be 19 soon and then I have to pay for the courses myself- I have no money to pay for that.

I'm stuck and can't get out.

The only thing I can think of, is to keep recieving Job Seeker Allowance benefit and save it all up, and use that money to get myself out of this mess.

  1. Speak to your local college - usually 19 + students without a level 3 qualification (A level equivalent) are entitled to free tuition. You may have to pay for materials (£50-250 depending on your subject) and travel but there are grants and bursaries to help. (you can claim up to £30 per week through ALG)

Alternatively, contact your local college and ask about apprenticeships, this way you can study, work for a wage and get qualified all at the same time.

The job centre will also have details of courses you will get for free and apprenticeship opportunities in your area.

good luck with it all and dont give up!

  2. hitch hike

  3. Can't you get a bus into town?  Or maybe you need to find a job in town and then move out of your parents home - spread your wings so to speak.

  4. Okay, job seekers allowance would help massively.

Let's think about this. Don't worry, u've got ur entire life ahead of u to sort it out, it'll be okay I PROMISE!

U quit college :/ U just had to do two years! U cud have done wot ever u wanted after that!

But anyway, the past is the past.

If you move, although it will sting financially to begin, you will repay that wen you work, and it will be a good move.

You could also go back to college. With job seekers allowance- ranges on circumstance, if u live with ur parents with no children, it'd be about £50-£100, and possible EMA -up to £30 a week (i think u can still qualify cant you?), it's doable, and would be a very good move, you won't regret

Or you could take out a student loan to pay for college, invest in urself. However, wait till the financial crisis is over!

It's going to be ok, enjoy ur freedom. Stay with ur parents til u can be sure to support ur self. Dont worry, i believe you'll make it. You can be anyone.

    Good luck xx!

  5. are there any buses or trains?

or any shops you can work in or any jobs you can do for people anything,  like window cleaning doing ppls gardens etc if you save up enough you can get where you want to be.

you can up money, maybe rent a flat nearer a place where there is work, or get driving lessons and buy yourself a little run around to get to and from work.

good luck i know how hard it is to try and do something but you need money to get to do it and you can only get the money from doing that something

its a hard life but you need to work at it.

  6. Cant you enquire at the job centre about training schemes and see if anything is suitable.  Dont give up - there's got to be a way around this.  Be determined

  7. Make sure you reach out to your local churches and let them know you are interested in working.  They may be able tto help you.

What about becoming a live-in mother's helper? Probably wouldn't make too much money but you would make some plus gain experience.

What about joining up with somone who already works in the town that's 40 minutes away?  Once you get  a job you could split the cost of the drive.

  8. How about a live in hotel job for a few months?

You can go see somewhere new in a nice area, meet new people and save a packet while you are there

Then you can come back with enough saved to rent your own place nearer to town

  9. i thought that if you were on job seekers allowance you got your course fees paid for? I could be wrong but its prob worth you checking it out.
