How can I convert a VOB file to AVI without downloading a program to do so?

Question

Someone I know actaully did this. He changed the file name from .vob to .avi and then selected something in properties that tricked the file into thinking it was an avi. I want to repeat what he did but I've forgotten exactly what he selected. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
