Question:

How can I convert a vhs to a dvd and/or online video?

I have a video of a school play from ten years ago that I would LOVE to watch again, and put up on youtube for some of my scattered classmates to watch.

The problem with the video is that I believe it was recorded in a European format. We lived in Norway at the time and I vaguely remember something about different television formats?

When I try to play it on my (american) vcr it only shows static and a speeded up dialog is heard. How can I convert it to a watchable format?

  1. You have to get a vcr that can play your tape. Try looking for second hand vcr players at pawnshops (bring the tape with you when you do to test before buying).  The video standard in the US is PAL/Secam and in Europe it is NTSC (or vice versa). So get a vcr that plays the same video standard as your tape. Easier still, if you remember the camera brand you used, get a vcr with the same brand (sony with sony, jvc with jvc, etc.)

Attach the vcr to your pc via capture card. Again, pay attention to the video standard. While the tape is playing, your pc can capture the video and save it to mpeg format. You can burn the mpeg format to dvd or upload it to youtube.

Remember, however, that youtube videos are limited to 10 minutes per upload. 1mb of video uploads at an average of 5 minutes. So the bigger the file size, the longer it will take to upload.

  2. Maybe you can try this DVD Creator to burn them on a DVD, and remember selecting  NTSC as TV standard.
