They are supposed to come here in September while we go back to their home in January. My dad says that he doesn't want a stranger that he has never met staying in our home. It's just an 18 year old girl who would go to school during the day while she was here. This is posing such a problem for me! What do I do???

  1. We are hosting an exchange student right now. He leaves for Brazil next week. It's actually been a great experience. We've enjoyed learning about his culture as much as he has ours. I've even learned to make a few 'brazilian' recipes so he won't be so homesick.

2 weeks isn't a long time. Explain to your dad that it's a great learning experience for her AND you. Offer to do extra housework or something and let him know how important it is to you. Also, they do thorough checks on these young people. They have to have a clean bill of healthy, decent grades and have a clean criminal record. He wouldn't be inviting some deranged killer into his home. Then ask him how he would feel if a family turned you down because they don't know you.

If he wants to talk to someone who has actually hosted an exchange student, feel free to have him contact me. You can e-mail me through yahoo answers. I'd be more than happy to explain how it works and what our experience has been like. My sister has had 2 exchange students (one from Germany and one from Vietnam) and my aunt has hosted one.

Good luck and have fun in January!

  2. What have you done for him lately?

  3. try the whole "it'll be such a learning experience for all of us" and the "it'll help me expand and grow as a person" aspects if you haven't tried those yet... hopefully that'll work for you

  4. Convince your dad that this would be a culturally beneficial experience for you. And he should be in favour of contributing to the enrichment of your education. That this is something that not everybody has an opportunity for. And he should want his little girl to be able to experience cool things like that. If my daughter used these lines on me I'd let her do anything she wanted. And mention in passing that she could be a blond hair blue eyed hottie.
