Question:

How can I convince my friend that figure skating is a real sport?

I've done figure skating since September of 2007 and I've gotten really good. I love figure skating, despite the high demand of skill, flexibility, and endurence that it requires. My friend however, is a major athelete. She's really into team sports and hanging out with guys. BUT SHE SAYS FIGURE SKATING IS NOT A REAL SPORT! And what I need is a website, a reeeeally good website I can send her....say, with an article about this topic. I'd rather not have you guys just say everything you know, because despite the fact I'm interested, it'll be better if I show her a professional article. No offense guys, you're just as good to me. But yeah so, PLEASE help me. I really need to persuade her.

  1. I would distance myself from people like her and do your own thing. Why should her opinion really matter if you like what you do.. good luck validating you insecurities though hope you get that article.....

I hope these sites will help you convince your "friend"!

If she still has an attitude problem with you about this then she isn't your friend. She could very well be jealous of you. With any sport it takes talent, hard work & practice. You need to be able to do this not only physically, but mentally. So your friend must think racing isn't a sport either! Well it is! Just because she can't do all sports doesn't mean it's not. She is just being competative. She may be good @ her own sports, but that doesn't mean those are the only sports.

I wish you the best of luck in figure skating! Stick to it and stay strong! Someday we might see you @ the Winter Olympics! =D

  3. It is an Olympic Sport. They have to be in top condition to compete. It is very precise and technical.

  4. You won't persuade her. Figure skating isn't a sport. It's dancing on skates.

Ballet isn't a sport, but it too requires years of hard work, training, and natural talent. You must also be physically fit, flexible, and have endurance, and deal with lots of pain and even physical deformity of feet.

Sports need to have a clear cut set of rules like basketball, baseball, football etc. Or be able to be measured like how fast a person runs, or how far they can jump. These aren't subjective.

Figure skating, gymnastics and dance are all physically demanding, skilled activities, and not everyone can do them or be good at them; But they are more about subjective traits like creativity and style. Those can't be really be measured or scored.

I once saw a study done on a percussionist in a Drum and Bugle corp (Marching band) and they found that a percussionist, (they can't measure breathing on a wind player since, well they can't hook up any thing to measure the amount of oxygen they are taking in since they are playing.) expends just as much energy in one 7-8 minute show as a football player does in an entire game.

Marching Band isn't a sport either.

These are physically demanding art forms; Not sports.

  5. Anything that is physical is a sport.

  6. Just tell her OLYMPICS . . .

If figure skating is not a sport, then how is it that it's part of the Olympics?

I'd like to see her argue against the Olympic Committee! :P

From the Official Olympic Movement Website:

    SPORTS ON THE OLYMPIC PROGRAMME

    SKATING

Hope that helps - and  keep on skating well!!!

  7. The fact that its the most watched part of the winter Olympics should speak for itself. They don't have Olympic cheer leading competitions now do they?
