Question:

How can I convince my mom let me get a conure?

I currently have a 6 year old guinea pig and a 4 year old budgie.

I love my budgie to death, but I never really wanted a parakeet, I actually found him abandoned in a show cage [in a paper bag] at the park. But for the longest time, I've wanted a conure. There are two hand-fed green cheeked conures at the petco near my house, and they are still being weaned. How can I convince my mom to let me get the conure? She knows that I know everything about everything about birds, and I have enough money to buy it. Thanks <3

  2. Your mom may feel you have enough to take care of with the parakeet. are you being responsible and taking good care of the parakeet. You know birds are allot of care, it is one thing to say I want two conures but it is another to say to your mom that you are going to care for water, feed, change the cage, provide the funds for the upkeep of three birds and give them the attention that they are going to need as well. Birds need intervention, just like little kids do. Also, do you realize how noisy conures are? They are very loud ,and they don't stop just because you want them to. they are worse than a crying baby that you can't console. Good luck hon, but I don't think a conure is a good idea either Of anything, a mate for your parakeet.

  3. start out by asking for a horse and work ur way down.

  4. What are the reasons she doesn't want you to get the bird? I have a pineapple conure which is a mutation of a green cheeked. Tell her that they are not known to be loud like other conures. The Pyrrhura conures(ex. green cheeked) are much quieter than the Aratinga conures(ex. sun conure) Most people think that all conures are screamers, the green cheek can get loud, but I have never heard mine be annoyingly loud. They are small birds that are only about 10" in total lengh. They are sweet birds and your mom will probably love it as well. Has she been there to see the conure yet? That might help.

  5. Start off by showing her how EXTRA responsible you are, and find yourself a reputable breeder in the area, rather than purchasing from a big box chain. The average price (in our area, at least) of a green cheeked conure is about $499 at the pet stores, whereas a breeder can not only be a source of actual, valid information (provided you DO YOUR RESEARCH and find a good, qualified breeder with experience and care for his/her birds) but the average breeder price here is about $225-250.

Even BETTER, you could rescue yet another bird in need from an unwanted situation, and rather than perpetuate the big box pet trade at all, you could check your local ads for a bird who has outlived his welcome in his current home. These birds are frequently healthy, problem free birds, whose owners simply can't be bothered to care for them any longer, or who find themselves in a change of situation and are forced to give them up. We rescued a green cheek less than a week ago for $130 with a full cage set up. Mind you, he was in less than perfect condition, but nothing a little TLC can't fix.

Buy with your head, not your heart, and you'll show your mom that you're responsible. Sit her down, and outline all the reasons for your rationale. Google, google, google, and go in prepared. Over prepared, even. And then be prepared to have no life. Green cheeks take a lot more work than parakeets, and you have to be home every night... for the next 25 years or so.

I run a bird rescue, and I don't want your bird knocking on my door in five years, deal? ;O)
