How can I convince my mom to let me get Degu's.?

There's a group of degu's at animal rescue that I'd really love to get, and I have done some research about Degu's and they seem great.

I already have 2 gerbils that I've had 10 months that live in an aquarium that I give PLENTY of attention to, and love dearly, but my mom noticed I was indicating that I wanted to get them, and I showed her the cute pictures of them, and she adored them, and I told her if no one gets them they'll just be bought as snake food, or get put down. But she says we have enough pets in the house already(1 dog, 2 gerbils). I have the money, and time, and commitment to them, and I was wondering how I can get her to let me get Degu's.

  1. Stomp, whine, pout, cry.... OR wait until you are old enough to by one and care for it yourself in your own house! I had to wait until I moved out!

  2. take extra care of your pets. and show her that you can handle more by also cleaning up with out her asking. and be on your best behavior. since school is starting up soon(for me at least) show her that your getting ready for it by doing some school work you may still have from a work book or something and have a plan for the Degus ready to show that you've given it a lot of thought and can take good care of it.

    good luck!

  3. Hi, Do you know anything about Degus? there not the same as keeping gerbils, they cannot have any sugar in there diet, must eat guinea pig food only, veg can be given as a treat, they need a sand bath twice a week, they can live in a fish tank but will need lot of climbing stuff as they love to climb, We have degus as pets & they are lovely to keep but they are a more exotic rodents & should be thought about really hard before getting them, Just getting them because there cute or end up as snake food to me is not a good reason & anyway you go save these from the pet shop there only going to get more in to sell. Also its aganist the law for any pet shop to use live rodents they sell to be killed & used as snake food.

  4. First of all, kudos to you for actually taking the time to research degus before you go out and adopt some.

It just sickens me that people just get one, and don't feed the poor baby anything but...dog food or hamster food, and then the degu has to suffer of diabetes because of the owners ignorance.

And even more kudos for you realizing that degus can live for a long time and need someone to commit to them! That you are able to properly care for them and have the time you need to give them a happy and healthy life.

I think you are one of the perfect examples of a (possible) future degu owner. I applaud. :D

And, tell your mom for me that you can never have enough pets. I have fifteen right now, and we're getting two bunnies next Monday to make it 17. ^_^ As long as you can care for them all properly, I don't think you can ever have too many. (:

Well, now to the question at hand.

The reason I got my first degu, was my uncle's friend had adopted one, and she couldn't take care of him anymore. So my uncle called my mom and asked if we would like to adopt him. I had not known what a degu was, much less ever heard of one. So I did immense amounts of research, and we went to pick him up about a week or so later. That was a few years ago, and now we have twelve. xD

Since you take great care of your gerbils ( I assume your dog, too), that is a plus. Your mom knows you know how to take care of the ones you have now. Degus are considerably more...'difficult' than gerbils, but with doing much research, it shouldn't be hard at all.

Of course, with the most obvious, help around the house more. Show your devotion to doing nearly anything to rescue the degus and give them a great home.

Talk with your mom about it. Ask if there is any other reason, aside from 'enough pets already', that could keep you from adopting them. If there isn't any other reason, then you should work on taking extra care of the animals you already have.

Keep hinting about them, and maybe bring your mom to the rescue so she could see them herself. Maybe if she sees them sitting in a "degu cuddle pile", she'll break and adopt the cuteness that are degus. xD  I know every time my mom sees them sitting like that, she almost melts because of how adorable they are. ;P

Other than that, really just show you are willing to make a serious commitment to the goos, and take excellent care of them. And continue to take care of the ones you already have.

Best of luck! Keep me posted if you adopt them or not. ^-^

And if you have not already, check out this links. (I'm also working on a site of my own, but it's far from being finished.)

Also, if you check the Wikipedia article, show your mom the picture of the baby degu in a sock. That was a picture I took of one of mine when they were little last August.

It gets everyone I show it to, everytime. :D
