Question:

How can I convince my mom to let me wear contacts?

I am going into the 8th grade this fall and I really want contacts. I have talked to my mom several times about purchsasing them, but she said no/desperately changed the topic each time. She gave me various reasonings -(I'm too young, she got hers when she was out of college, I'm not responsible enought to take care of them) - but I still want them.I have had glasses since the 6th grade and I am supposed to wear them during my classes. However, I really don't look good in them and that greatly lowers my self-esteem. That also means I avoid wearing my glasses at all costs.I have some rigorous classes next year and they require careful observations, so I'm afraid I'll fall behind in school too. So the bottom line is; how do I convince my mom to let me wear contacts?

  1. For one thing, contacts are expensive and not everybody can wear them (like me, well I can put them in but it constantly feels like there's something there) I guess you just have to wear them for a while and get used to it.

Just see if you can prove to her that you will be responsible with them.

And you're not too young, I got (well, tried) them when I was even younger than you.

  2. Try to have a serious conversation with her regarding your feelings towards contacts and some valid reasons why they would benefit you. Perhaps you can save up some money to pay for them or some anyway, to show her you are serious about it.

  3. if she thinks that you are not responsible, show her that you are responsible in other areas in your life...like by wearing your glasses!  Also do your chores without her having to get after you.

Do research on contacts, pros and cons.  maybe do a mini presentation for your mom and let her know that you are serious.  Show her that you have done the information.  If she is worried about the cost, let her know that you will do chores (if you don't have any) or more chores (if you do have them) to help pay for them.

on a side note.  glasses don't make the person.  it is what is on the inside, and if people don't realize that, then that is their loss (I understand that in the 8th grade it is difficult..but brush it off and be the better person).

  4. The bottom line is: how can you show your mom how responsible you are? My first guesses involve:

    putting your things away,

doing your chores without being asked,

taking care of things around the house that aren't even your chores,

    returning your library books,

not waiting until the last minute to tell your mom about something that you need for school...

Do all of that for six or seven weeks. Remember that every time you forget something like a normal kid, you are sending your mom a message: Yes, you're right. Like most kids my age, I am too irresponsible and forgetful to wear contacts!

  5. I tried 4ever to try to get my mom to let me where contacts. Then one day we were just at the eye doctor and out of the blue she said she'd get them for me. She said it was because I had shown her I was responsible enough! I had also looked up a lot of facts to show her I was dedicated! Good luck!

  6. I know exactly how you feel!

I've actually got my contacts now, after wearing my glasses for about 7 years, and my mum thinks im only using them for appearance, but so what if i am. lol .anyways, i just told the optician that i do a lot of sports, and i go out and glasses aren't really a option.

make sure you have a good reason to get them, like you do sports and stuff and you can't wear the glasses because they'll knock off.

i dunno if i helped in anyway :)
