I am 13 and I have wanted to be an actress since I was around 8 years old, but my parents won't let me do it professionally. I know people will say ," Just wait until you're 18, then you're an adult and can do what ever." But that's the point. I'll be an adult and then It will be harder to find roles and make it, if you start out as a "teen" actor you can get ALOT more opportunities handed to you, because teen movies and television shows are everywhere now. So I am trying to talk my parents into letting me get an agent and getting home-schooled so I could go to auditions and such. But they won't budge on the idea. Any ideas or help? Please nobody criticize me for my choice in career. And yes, I do have quite a bit of experience with acting, and I have always been told I was good (not just to make me feel good "good" either).

  1. Hi

Your parents are probably already convinced that you want to act. What they are probably debating is whether or not that is the best thing to do, or more importantly, whether this is the right time to take this decision.

Every set of parents is different. They take different levels of convincing. What you may try however is to participate in amateur acting assignments (school drama, neighbourhood shows, etc), and at the same time continue your studies. Once they see you are really good and passionate about acting, they may be easier to convince.

There is one thought on which I differ with you. It is not necessary to be a teen star to land good acting assignments in future. You have to be good at your job at every stage to get those prime roles. Yes, experience counts, but havent we heard of people getting into filmdom really late?

My suggestion is : dont work yourself up on this. Study acting (yes, there is a lot to study here!) from whatever resource you can find. Keep participating in shows, and when the time is right, pop the question. It may be easier then.

    All the very best!
