I have recently purchased a VCR/DVD recorder combo for the purpose of moving my vast collection of VHS tapes to DVD for my own personal library. Many of that tapes are copyright protected and will not transfer. Is there any way around this?

  1. Not with your setup. It would be nice if the vendor would tell you before hand that you could not copy copyrighted VHS to dvd.

The best and easiest way is to buy an external encoder

http://www.adstech.com/ ADS makes some really nice ones that will plug right into your VCR and then plug into your PC via USB 2.0 or FIREWIRE and transfer the video onto your HDD. The advantage to this is that all of the encoding is done by the ADS box and not your CPU. This results in superior video quality!.

Once you have the video transfered onto your HDD, you can then make a DVD video.

  2. These devices, and others like them, are meant to go between the VCR output and DVD input. If your machine gives you access to those lines, then you can use this-see link below.

  3. Good question. Maybe you can do a "Rube Goldberg".
