I have put down weed block and rock but the weeds grow quickly and if I don't constantly pull them they take over.

  1. You will never get a weed free garden.  Landscape fabric is junk.  The weeds will just grow in the top layer of mulch.

  2. the most effective way to get rid of weeds is to cut everything down first, unfortunately. then cover the bed with heavy duty black plastic sheeting - nothing grows where there is no sunlight!

leave the bed alone for a good couple of weeks. the heat and moisture retained under the plastic will cause the plants & weeds that you had cut down to turn into a nutritious mulch.

when you are ready to start planting again, cover the sheeting with bark, apricot pip halves or gravel to hide it. bark looks quite nice, but it depends on what you'd like to plant.

cut a hole in the sheeting just big enough for whatever it is you are planting. dig a hole and plant your plant or sow your seed.

water it and care as you normally would. don't remove the sheeting.

  3. Lay down about 6 layers of newspaper then the soil on top. Or newspaper, black plastic and then soil. Mulch after plants are planted. Weeding is endless! i try to weed once a week and on days that I just go out and look at my gardens I pull anything growing that is a weed. It is easier to weed after a good rain storm also. They come right out roots and all.

  4. First, when I make the beds, I dig out all the grass & weeds I can.  I use a double layer of weed block and rocks in mine.  Once you have the plastic down, don't walk on it, especially after the rocks are in.  That makes little holes in it & any source of light & those weeds find it.  When they do crop up, I use a spray weed killer that is safe for landscape plants.

Lots of people use mulch, I don't cause it floats away and it can draw termites depending on what kind it is.

Ground covers do help.  They will choke out a lot of the weeds, but not all.  They can also choke out some of your flowers, depending on what you have planted.

None of these are weed free or work free, unfortunately, but hope it helps some.

  5. Plant lots of ground cover,it usually strangles the weeds.
