How can I deal with the rude, loud neighbors upstairs?

Since we have lived here (about 4 or 5 months) they have had some of them move out and more move in. They have more people living there then is okay-ed on the lease. I was in a bad car accident a couple weeks ago and am in a lot of pain. I also work at 7 am most days and they are LOUD until 2 or 3 am. Usually when it get's really bad for hours on end I knock on the wall so they know it's loud.. then they just laugh and continue or hit the wall back really loud and continue.

I know my landlord has had problems with them a month or 2 ago. Should I just call her with more problems or call the police? They have made rude comments when they see us leave by yelling out the window and they've done it to out other neighbors.

What would you do?

  1. Any time it lasts longer than a couple of minutes, call the landlord first so they are aware of the situation, then call the police.  You have to be consistent and do it every time.  This way, both the landlord and the police department will have a record of their behavior.  This will help the landlord to start an eviction process if need be and helps the police identify possible problems in the neighborhood.  


  2. Call The Landlord First. Do that during the and tell he/she that  you will call the police on the noisy neighbors if they dont stop when the landlord warns them!  Good Luck!

  3. They think your annoying to if you don't talk to them and be a grown up.

    If they are to inmature about it than..Write a letter to the landlord or take them to court and sue them and get a recorder of all the noise they do.

    If you call the cops all they will do is tell them and leave and keep doing noise.

    (Used to live on the last floor in apts and had annoying neighbors downstairs) about my noise...I moved to a house now.


  4. being that late at night i would definately call the police due to noise violations, and i would also talk to the landlord as well.  

  5. I'd call the police, but report it anonymously. I have almost the same problem. My downstairs neighbors have tons of people filing in and out all night long, their kids run up and down the hallway, jump on and off their bunk beds, etc at all hours of the night. It's very frustrating. My friend, who lives in the same complex, said the same people used to live above his mom and they would get so rowdy they would knock pictures off the wall and after several complaints management transferred them to my building..thanks.

    Anyway, that's the best you can do. After the call to the police then they will inform your property manager of the reason they were called out there and then management will hopefully in return do more about it.

  6. Call the landlord first and see if he does anything about it and if he doesn't just notify him (the landlord) that your going to call the police next time this happens. Good luck =)

  7. Your only recourse is the legal process, so document and record as much as you can, with specific dates and times.  Use a decimeter if possible. Research the noise ordinance for your city. Don't call the police out, but do file a police report at the station (they are busy enough with violent crimes). Inform the landlord of each incident (don't complain). Then take the violators to court.

  8. Call the cops. They will NEVER KNOW...They police are suppose to keep it confidential...but to be safe just do NOT GIVE YOUR NAME...Just give the address that is being super loud..I would not disturb the landlord.

Report to your landlord your concerns about noise, harassment, and number of people living in the unit upstairs.  If noise is excessive at 2:00am don't be afraid to call the police and make a noise complaint.  Realize that calling the cops on them will not make them more pleasant to live with so you may need to document the instances and inform your landlord that if the problem does not get better you will be forced to break the lease since you do not have peaceful enjoyment of your residence.
