Question:

How can I decline job offer without burning bridges?

I was offered a job that I really want. The problem is that the timing is wrong. They want me to travel for training and I have a baby and cant leave for so long. I would like to decline the offer but be reconsidered in a few months OR be put in the next training class. How does this work usually? If you have done this before or work in HR, please let me know the policy!

  1. I'd call up the HR department or whoever your contact is there and explain the problem to them.  Simply ask them if they can put you into the next training class now.  Since they want you to work there and this is a very reasonable request considering your situation maybe you could still essentially accept the offer now but with a start date a few months out.  One question that may come up though is didn't you know about this problem when you applied?  Anyhow, can't hurt to ask.
