How can I delete the folder icons without deleting whats in them?

I have folders to seperate my pictures but now I want the folders off my desktop, but I want to keep the pictures and if I drag the folders into my recycle bin, the pictures delete too. What do I do? The main point is to get the folder icons gone I dont want them taking up my screen, it bothers me to have many icons.

Click on start>my documents>drag the folders there while holding down on left mouse button
