Question:

How can I delete the search history that pops up when I type into the search bar?

I know how to delete "History." But that does not effect the drop-down menu that appears when I type into the search bar (on Yahoo!, MySpace, etc.), showing every word/search I've ever done (alphabetically). I don't want this list to appear anymore (especially when friends use my computer, and can see every search I've ever done, if they happen to type a word with the same starting letter). Help! Thanks.

  1. There are other ways, but the directions will be different depending on which browser you're using. This works no matter which browser you are using. If you want to clear the searches from the search box menu on Yahoo or Google pages, double click the search box, this will make a menu drop down with your searches, put your cursor on what you want to delete to highlight it, hit the delete button on your keyboard. If you want to delete everything just hold the delete button down until everything is deleted.

If you want to clear the search history and disable the feature entirely so none of your searches are saved, do the following:

    Internet Explorer 6

To clear the search box history on Yahoo! and Google pages > on Internet Explorer toolbar click Tools > Internet Options > Content tab > under Personal information, click the AutoComplete box, on the AutoComplete Settings window click the Clear Forms box to delete your current history, or you can uncheck the Forms box to permanently stop the generation of the search history, click OK.

    Internet Explorer 7

To clear the search box history on Yahoo! and Google pages > on Internet Explorer toolbar click Tools > Internet Options > on the General tab under Browsing History, click Delete > in the dialogue window that opens click Delete Forms > click Apply and OK.

On Internet Explorer 7, to stop the generation of the search box history on Yahoo! and Google pages, click Tools > Internet Options > Content tab > under AutoComplete, click Settings and uncheck the Forms box > click OK.

To clear the searches on Yahoo Toolbar:

If you have the the new Yahoo! Toolbar, click the Settings (avatar) button located next to the Bookmarks Button and click Clear Recent Searches. To stop saving search history, click the Settings button and un-check Remember Remember Recent Searches, or click Toolbar Options and un-check Auto-clear recent searches when exiting IE.

If you have the older Yahoo! Toolbar, click the pencil icon beside the search box and click Clear Recent Searches.

  2. do what robert w said

  3. Turn auto complete off - it's in the content tab of Internet Explorer.. be sure to delete saved forms.

Tools > Internet Options > Content > Auto Complete button > uncheck all of the options, and clear forms.. hit ok.

  4. For Internet Explorer: Click on Tools. Then Internet Options. Click on Content and then Auto Complete. Then click on Clear Forms. This will erase your search history. If you don't want things showing up again in your search history then deselect the Auto Complete options at the top. Be sure to select apply or ok at the bottom.

  5. Okay....click the search bar(with mouse...you'll see the flashing bar once done.) The list of things you have searched will pop up in the list. Take your mouse and roll over each thing so on your first thing(lets say it's apples)---it looks like your highlighting it- roll over with your cursor the word apples then on your keyboard click the delete button.Go down the list highlighting and deleting. :)
