How can I detect satellite?

Last night I was in balcony and I saw two lights in the sky moving continuously east-to-west and west-to-east. I'm sure those are not fighter jets, were those satellites? Is there any way to find out if there are satellites over your head taking photos or just moving?

  1.   You can see then just before dawn or just after sunset.

They move slowly but perceptively and will disappear as they move out of the sunlight.

  2. Download the free Orbitron sat tracking software--- and tell Sebastian thank you for giving it away for free.

  3. this can be done by your own telescope ,that if you were fond of that things.

  4. I also like to use heavens-above.com, you set your lat/long when you sign in.  They will tell you what's directly over head of where you live.  They have a table of all satelites, their time schedule, their direction, their brightness.  It's fun to watch the ISS when a space shuttle is up there, they follow each other before and after docking, it's amazing!

  5. http://www.n2yo.com/ to track satellites. As to if they're taking photos, what difference will it make?

  6. You can get a set of Two-Line elements from the internet and display them with tools like for example Heavensat.

Also, all satellites move. And all satellites have a purpose. Some make photos, others make satellite communication, again others make radar observations or intercept special radio communications.
