How can I deter or get rid of midgies that keep coming in my windows and covering my white windowsill?

Loads of the little black midgies... can't shut windows, too darned hot! Any thing that might deter them or at least help to do this. They make me squirm!

Place a lemon or vinegar in a bowl,they hate the smell!
