Question:

How can I determine what my pell grant would be?

I filled out the FASFA and my EFC was 0. The lady in the financial aid department at school told me that I qualified for a pell grant because I didn't work last year due to an accident. All I had to do was get a form from the IRS saying I didn't file taxes and I would receive the grant. I'm just wondering is there anyway to figure out how much it would be for, so if I need to start applying for student loans I can start very quickly..

  1. Hi, if you filled out a FASFA form, and you have never used a federal student loan in the past then you will not have to apply for a loan separately.

Every student in the education system using federal aid for college receive the same fixed amount of money in grants and loans. The detail that determines this fixed amount is your class status. Since you are 25 and thus considered "independent" in the eyes of financial aid, you will be allowed a bit more aid than someone who is considered dependent. If you ask your financial aid office this question they will be able to tell you. School just don't always put out all the details unless you ask them up front.  :)

FASFA includes the Pell grant, the PHEAA grant, the SEOG grant, work study, the Subsidized federal student loan, unsubsidized student loan, and the Perkins loan. These are the most commonly used, but there are more available depending on status, circumstances, etc.

In order to find out all the details about your financial aid-grants and loans you can login to a couple sites.  AESsuccess and NDLS or the National Direct Student Loan site will provide you with everything from the amounts you are estimated to receive, will receive, distribution dates, repayment info, and info on the organization who handles your money (which can be different for everyone). This site will come in handy later in your education, especially near graduation when your making future plans, deciding to consolidate or not, and choosing payment plans.

The site below has several links that should be of some help.

  2. The maximum Pell grant one can receive per year is $4,731.00 if you attend full time and meet about a million other requirements.  Your school would get half in the fall and half in the spring.  You can get a Stafford loan of up to 7,500 a year if you are a independent freshman. You apply for those in your schools finanical aid office.

  3. You cant they will notify you of the amount. But if you dont file and used you parents return because they claim you it may not be that much. If you come from a low income family it may be pretty decent but if your middle like I was it may just be enough to cover your tuition and books with a few hundred left over which is not bad but I had friends whose parents didnt make much or had alot of other kids and they over a thousand left over after everything. You cans till apply for student loans if it turns out that you dont need them you will still have the option to not use it. GOOD LUCK! FYI: the first answer is a complete scam, DO NOT email him!
