Question:

How can I develop my breathing while running?

I'm trying to work on my breath control while running outside. I've been doing treadmill running and started my training to move to the outside on the road (training for my first 5-k). Well, I learned a VERY important lesson, outside running vs treadmill is night and day different lol. My legs and body felt fine but after only 50 yards my lungs felt horrible. If anyone has any advice on breathing techniques I'd be greatly appreciated, thanks!

  1. Pace influences breathing.  I would suggest running at a pace that still allows you to talk.  If you can't talk or sing you are going too fast.  The pace at which you are still able to speak without (too much) discomfort is your aerobic threshold.  Once you get close to the finish shut the h**l up and run as hard as you can.

  2. breathe in through your nose out through your mouth.

  3. breath more steadily to actually slow and control heart rate... it should make you last longer. Deep breath in and short one out to get as much oxygen to your muscles as possible. I would work on breathing while running outside because it is very different.

  4. running on the road is way easier than running on a tread mill. i suggest u take long slow breaths while running.
