My daughter's room has popcorn ceiling and I would like to find a way to disguise it. Is there a good painting technique that would make it look less like stucco?

  1. Hi Dear,

The only way i know how to do this,is take all the popcorn c**p off the ceiling and re-texturee it and then paint.

  2. No!  Undoing popcorn is dirty work.  You could probably knock it down with a coarse grade sandpaper and get it close to a knock-down finish but it's still not going to look right.  There are two practices usually used.  Most costly and time consuming is to tear it down and put up new drywall, tape and paint.  The other is to glue or fasten a ceiling material over top of your popcorn finish and maybe do the edges in crown mold.  What you do depends on what kind of architecture your home uses.  In either case, I would still use a coarse grit sandpaper to knock down the popcorn finish and then clean with a tack cloth for a better stick with the ceiling tile glue.  Unless you have some skills in remodeling you would probably be wise in getting somebody with the needed skills to help you.

  3. You can scrape it off, which is messy and time consuming or hire someone to put up a new ceiling with wallboard. That is what I did when I painted mine and the ceiling started to come off with the paint in a large area. There is no easy way around this problem. You can just paint it and some of the tips of the popcorn ceiling will seem less textured, but not gone.

  4. you might consider using pressed tin or copper ceiling panels, they look really good and are easy to use.

  5. Alumenum foil.

  7. It depends on if you're allowed to get rid of it or not (do you own or rent?).

I'm not sure about paint techniques to completely cover it. It would have to be extremely thick paint in order to cover the crackley bits.

If you rent or would rather get an easy fix, you could go the creative route and buy a large piece of plain white fabric from a fabric store. Something a with some slight thickness to it. then tack/staple it up in all 4 corners very tightly. It gives the illusion that the ceiling is flat and white. If you have a younger child, this could be fun because you can let her pick out a fun fabric with stars on it or something. It's fairly cheap. If the room isn't perfectly square, you can still do it but you'll have to do it in sections rather than one large piece.

If you own the house, it's fairly inexpensive to have someone come in and blast it off for you. once it was sanded off, you can finish the painting yourself and save money.

  8. Obviously the best thing to do have a professional/handyman scrap it off (with a drywall knife) do some touch up on the joints and have a hand texture put on, like a skip trowel design OR YOU can scrap off the tips of the texture(with a drywall knife) and then painting it a darker color...

Either way, I recommend painting the ceiling a darker color... popcorn is almost always a white. That is because it is not painted originally when sprayed on, as that is the color of the compound. You will need a very nappy roller or you could spray the paint on.

Good luck and what a good daddy for giving your daughter a new looking room =D

  9. I HATE THAT STUFF. My brother and I removed all of the popcorn off all the ceilings in the house this summer...ITS SUCH A HASSLE TO REMOVE!...

The best thing i can suggest is to buy or RENT one of those paint spray guns...but be sure NOT TO SATURATE THE POPCORN or it can turn to SLUDGE and make a totally mess...so let paint dry between coats!

    Hope that helped. :)

  10. u could try metal celing tiles.. dunno if that helps

  11. take spackle and spread it on the celing if you use enoughit should cover it nicely

  12. If you decide to scrape be VERY careful, some of the older popcorn ceilings had asbestos in them.
