How can I dispute collections item that is not mine?

There is a hospital bill that is not mine on my credit report, from a city I've never been to. The credit bureau "verified" it and is not removing it. It's for $1600 and I'm afraid I'll have to end up paying for it because it will cost more to hire an attorney. Any suggestions?

Contact the accounting department at the hospital and determine how they might have acquired your name and other information . If it's

a legitimate error, they will correct the credit bureau report.

If they refuse, you have grounds for legal redress, and can recover

your legal expenses. But, make certain it isn't a freind, relative, or someone who may have billed the hospital expense to you. That being the case, it might be necessary to retain an attorney if you dispute the

debt to be your own.

GET A COPY OF THE BILLING ? CONTACT THE HOSPITAL THAT ISSUED THE BILLING. VERIFY THE SS # THE ADDRESS, NAME ETC.W/ SUPERVISOR OF A/R DEPT. 2) UPON SEEING THE MISTAKE, SUPERVISOR CAN RE-ISSUE THE CORRECTION TO THE CREDIT BUREAU. AND THEN REMOVE FR YOUR ACCT.AND BE SURE YOU  GET ALL CONVERSATION AGREEMENT ISSUED IN WRITING, FAX TO YOU.  AND ALWAYS GET THE PHONE NUMBER & EXT. TO CONTACT THIS PERSON AGAIN. W/ THEIR FAX # AS WELL.  DONOT PAY. IF THIS IS NOT YOUR BILLING. IF THIS DOESNT RESOLVE. CONTACT ATTY.   DO NOT PAY, IF THIS IS NOT YOUR BILLING.... I DONT CARE HOW LONG IT STAYS ON YOUR CREDIT. SEND A RESPONSE TO CREDIT CO. AND HAVE IT POSTED AND KEEP W/ YOUR PERMANENT RECORDS FOR YOUR FUTURE LEGAL STUFF . ( INCLUDING A COPY OF THE OTHER PERSONS' BILLING.) last - atty may chg something up front. but he will charge the person responsible for all legal billings . you will be reimbursed and the jugement will be cleared at the time of the hearing settled.

Clydeedi has the procedure which you must follow. get the copy of the bill from the hospital for starters. If they do not comply, report this to the Attorney General of the state with a copy to the Collection people, hospital and put the Credit Bureau on notice that false information they refuse to alter may result in a suit on them. Whatever you do, don't pay if you don't owe.

You have a right to dispute something on your credit that isnt yours. especially if you can provide proof you were never in that city, eg u were at work tha same day of service.  there should be a place on your credit report where you can dispute it. its your right. good luck
