How can I do cross stitch on wool? Is it possible to make your own stamped pattern?

I want to do some cross stitching on the back of a large coat collar. How could I go about doing this when the weave in wool is difficult to see? Is there any easier way?

I love the old-fashioned look of the airy, wide-spaced stamped patterns, but I wonder... is it possible to make your own stamped pattern? How could I put a pattern onto my own fabric?

  1. I am aware of this product  (waste canvas) but I wouldn't use it on wool......wool tends to shrink badly when wet.

question #1......I would think it would be nigh to impossible.

If you find otherwise, please let us know.

#2, yes it is possible to make your own cross stitch patterns.

  2. You can buy something called waste canvas to do cross stitch on fabric.  Look for it in a craft store.  You baste the waste canvas onto the fabric in a size slightly bigger than the pattern you want.

Then you do the stitching using a needle that will go through the fabric--don't use a cross stitch needle, they are too blunt to pass through the fabric.  When you are finished, you wet the waste canvas.  The starch in it dissolves and then you pull out each thread with tweezers.  You are left with your design on the fabric.

I have done this many times, it takes patience, but works great.
