How can I donate my old fiction and text books in London?

I have around 200 books I need to get rid of as I'm moving abroad, it's difficult to get to a charity shop as there are so many and I don't have a car. Also some of them are fiction, but others are quite techie engineering and IT books which I'm not sure charity shops would want. They cost a lot to buy and some might be useful to someone so don't really want to throw them out! I've tried freecycle already with no luck...

  1. Have you tried Craigslist yet? You can place an ad there letting people know that you have a lot of books that you're giving away to anyone who wants them. Here's a link to the London Craigslist: http://london.craigslist.co.uk/

Also, some thrift/charity shops do pickups of items from your home, if you have a lot of things to donate and can't transport them all. You might want to give some stores a call and see if they have this service. Failing that you might want to try your local newspaper and place an ad about the free books, or as a last resort you could simply put a sign in your front yard that reads "Free books! Help yourself" and place the books in boxes around the sign.

  2. It may be worth contacting a lcoal library to see if they want them. Library budgets have been slashed over the years so they are often keen to accept donations of books as long as they aren't too tatty and can often collect them.
