Question:

How can I dye something made out of polyurethane (PU)?

I need to dye something (my grappling gloves) made out of polyurethane, how would I do this? Is there a specific type of dye I can buy in order to do this? Would a leather dye work?

I have previously tried a permanent marker, which didn't keep the colour, it went from red to pink after a time. Also the material is next to skin which gets hot and sweaty so it needs to be resistant to that.

Thank you for looking!

  1. It's not going to happen, the colour is added when it's made. You'll have to buy some in the right colour.

  2. This might be the answer to what you're looking for, it's a product called "Plasti-Dip" and it was originally intended to dip tool handles in, to give them a rubber coating so that they're softer on the hands, but you can use it on anything you want to give a flexible rubber-like coating too. The stuff comes in several different colors (pretty much just basic primary colors, including red). You can brush it on, or you can dip those gloves in the stuff. Check it out:

  3. I know of nothing that would be permanent.  Even porous material such as cotton fabric does not hold color well if not done when origanally fabricated. Best to look for some in the color you want.
