Question:

How can I dye sports mesh into different colors?

I am looking to buy sports mesh in different cool colors, but it looks like there are only primary colors available. I was wondering if I am able to dye white mesh to different colors like neon green, baby blue, etc. I've called a dozen screen printing and fabric companies, but nothing....and no referrals, either.

Can someone pls help? Thanks!!!

  2. stick it in dye or fabric paint

  3. What is the sports mesh made of? The answer is completely different for a nylon mesh than it is for a polyester mesh. Neither will work if they've been treated with any kind of stain-resistant or water-resistant finish, though.

To dye polyester, do not use any dye that you can buy locally. Ordinary dyes will not work on polyester. Instead, mail-order a special polyester dye called disperse dye, and then boil your polyester mesh with the dye for an hour. (Note that you should never reuse a cooking pot for food preparation after using it to dye fabric, because fabric dyes will contaminate food.)

You can order disperse dye from PRO Chemical & Dye in the US, Batik Oetoro in Australia, or Kemtex Educational Supplies in the UK. You can order a new brand of disperse dyes, iDye Poly (don't get the regular "iDye", only "iDye Poly") from Dharma Trading Company in the US or Fibrecrafts in the UK.

Dyeing nylon mesh is different. Dyes for nylon are much more readily available. All-purpose dyes, such as Rit, will work on nylon if you boil the nylon with the Rit dye and some vinegar, but they will tend to bleed in the water. More wash-resistant dyes for nylon are the Lanaset dyes, which you can order from PRO Chemical & Dye in the US. Nylon is often treated with surface finishes that resist dye, unfortunately. Look for a source of sports mesh that is labeled "PFD", meaning "Prepared For Dyeing", or PFP, meaning "Prepared For Printing".
