I recently started volleyball practice which has had me working really hard for five hours straight a day. Obviously, I'm not used to working out this much and am suffering from severely sore muscles now. I'm wondering what would be the best way to help ease the pain. I can't rest a day since volleyball practice is everyday. Which works better? Heat or ice or both? I've heard different things from different people and I'm wondering which is best to use. Any advice?

  1. Meditation, very deep focused relaxation engages/activates the human regeneration/repair system. The active processing of pain signals also speeds up the healing/recovery process.

  2. Marathon runners sometimes take an ice-bath to help relieve the pain of DOMS, Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. Some runners swear by them.

Put some ice in a cool bath, you don't need to fill it with ice. Stay for about 10-15. It's supposed to work wonders.

  3. I'm a physical therapist.  Unfortunately, you've sent your body into shock.  And your body is responding by severe soreness.  After EVERY workout, no matter how tired you are, you need to stretch EVERY LARGE MUSCLE GROUP in your body.  Legs, arms, back.  If you're not allergic to anything or if you don't have stomach problems, you can try Advil to help relieve some of the soreness.  And lastly, get in a hot tub.  Most gyms have them.  If not, run a tub full of very warm water and soak.  It will work wonders.  But, DON'T FORGET TO STRETCH!!!!!!!!
