I fail at complying to a lot of conventional societal codes, and being deeply inspired by people such as John Krakauer, Dean Karnazes, Thoreau and Emerson, I got an idea. Basically after my senior year, before I go off to college and become a statistic, I want to go off on my own. I would like to do this in the California area, but it is not necessary. Another idea was the Appalachian trail, but I don't know for sure. I'm fine with any landscape, but I have Renauds syndrome, so cold is a definite no-no.

What an idea!  Certainly not the first to want to get close to nature.  So long as you are self sufficient and currently have no real direction in life it would be a great eye opener to see the real world.  Leopold, Emerson and Thoreau had visions before they took off and were not out of touch with society.

I believe you are going to find that there are many places you can trek but in our county the climate is temperate and it gets cold in the winter.

I would look into hospices along the way.  Learn to fish and snare animals for food.  I know that in Alaska you can catch all the fish you want for your own consumption without a license but I don't know how that plays out in other states.  The Appalachian Trail is open for long treks.  There are other trails that transverse the county.

As with any idea there are problems but there are ways to overcome many.  Best of all look for the trees in the forest.  It's the details of many things that are the most interesting.
