How can I explain this to my dad?

Ok so I'm in the 7th grade and couple of months ago I took the ACT (it was offered to anyone in the top 5% grades ) I don't know exactly what I scored but I do know that I scored in the top 14% out of the people that took it. So Duke (the college that allowed us to take this test) invited me to go to one of their camps, which would include taking classes for "gifted" kids and staying in a college dorm for something like 3 weeks. Well here is the big problem... It is somewhere in North Carolina and I live in West Texas. The furthest I have ever been from my parents is like 5 hour drive and only for a week =( I don't think my parents will allow me to go. Another issue is paying for it. I think I can get a Scholarship but would cover travel costs such as flying? Otherwise my dad would probably have to drive me there and back =/ we are a middle-class kind of family we don't have a lot of spare money & my bro is in college (which my dad is paying for)

  1. Lots of schools have programs like these, and Texas is a big place.  I suggest you do a little research and check out the local colleges... you will prob discover something like this goes on at several schools closer to you than 20 hours.  It will be a heck of a lot cheaper.

  2. take the train.

  3. don't let anything hold you back just definately get go

  4. If you are in the 7th grade then this isn't college. It would be a private school of some sort. If you can't afford private school I wouldn't bother going to find out what you can't afford. You still have 3-4 years until college, wait until then to weigh your options. It's a bit premature for a 7th grader to be weighing colleges. The good thing is that your brother will be done by then so you can formulate a realistic plan.

  5. get a job man ... and im sure hill be happy 4 u and let u go ?

  6. I'm not sure about flying discounts, but your parents should let you go! If they really love you, they would let you do this. It is a HUGE deal for you to get the chance to do this.

    I wish you luck mate!

  7. remember your parants want you to suceed, if you can show this in the light of the oppurtunity that it is of course your parants will want you to go, but be mindful of them feeling guilty for not being able to give it to you, and it might be possible to get a local paper to do an article about you needing money to get there

  8. aww you cant miss a chance like this, if your gifted you should definately talk to your parents. show them the results and see what they say, but dont be scared to talk to them about it, flying cant be that expensive can it? if it is you could mow  lawns or do a paperround or something until you earn some money, but DO talk to them and tell them what it means to you, im sure they will be happy to send you, your a smart kid

  9. push ur self and forget every thing that he will do to u

  10. I dont know what to tell you i took the same test last year and i didnt do great lol. I live 30 minutes away from duke but i probably couldnt help you! Sorry good luck i know how you feel!

  11. explain it to him just how you did here. i think he will understand becuase your doing so good

  12. the best way to describe to your dad is by describing it to him as you did here.

  13. Tell your parents ASAP. They will be super proud of you. I came from a middle class family also, and we didn't have a ton of extra money, so I remember when I found things like this that I wanted to do and feeling anxious about asking, maybe even a little guilty because I knew my family's financial situation. However. Taking the ACT in seventh grade and scoring the way you scored is a BIG deal. If you're nervous about them letting you go to the program in NC, make a list of reasons why you want to go, and ways that you can help defray costs. The program may even have financial assistance for kids in your situation, have your parents check into it. Good Luck : ) PS- don't worry about flying over there, if you end up flying. Get on a plane once and you'll be a pro flyer, it's a lot of fun. Because you are a minor, the airline will help you find your way around.

  14. tell him to either let you go or find a way there yourself!

  15. Dude I think you should ask your parents honestly and if they say no that try to convince them a little bit more, and if they still say no deal with it, and move on.

  16. Just tell him, I think he will be so proud of you, you are super smart, and sound like you have it together, he should be proud of you, Just tell him.

  17. Explain to your dad that this can be a live changing experience and this is for education and not for fun. I am sure if he understands that you want it strictly for the educational parts, he will find a way to pay for it.

I know how you feel, last year I wanted to go on the D.C. trip, and we had a hard time paying for it, but since it for educational purposes, it was worth it.

  18. Congratulations! I think you should start off with telling your dad about how great you did on your test and he'll probably praise you for a little bit, and that's when you talk about the camp. Relate it to 6th grade camp a little bit, and then hit him with the bad news. :( Talk about scholarships and how you guys could take a drive and have a lot of fun. What is answer is depends on what kind of dad he is. Good luck! Have fun! =)
