Do not enunciate, talk faster, do not pronounce the vowels as beautifully as the brits do! I'm american, and my choir teacher always tells us to sing like we're british because it always makes us sound way better!

British people actually do a better job of faking American than Americans do faking Brit.

I recommend you rent Julia Roberts movies and just repeat her lines.  The placement of the American accent is pretty pared down, and sits pretty forward in the mouth, whereas the English accent is more nasal and more rounded.

Also, Hugh Laurie does an excellent, excellent job of faking American on the show "House" -- he blows me away.  It's just so well done.

I'm assuming you want to do the "American" American accent, which is mostly the regular accent you hear in American films -- it's specifically the West Coast accent, because almost all successful movie actors come from/live in California.

Regional accents -- New Yorker, Bronx, Bostonian, Southerner, Southern Aristocratic, MidWestern, and Valley Girl are all examples of these -- are not what you'd want to shoot for; they're used usually for comic characters; people with these accents who want to be actors always have to learn to hide their accents and talk more like a West Coast native.
