How can I figure out what kind of wood my floor is?

  1. I answered a similar question last night.  I'll try to copy and paste it in......Here you go......

    Traditionally hardwood was and still is used for hardwood flooring, although pine is not unheard of. I have an old house and it has original maple floors in the upper story. Many period homes have maple, oak (red and white), hickory, beech, and even black walnut in some cases. It's hard to tell without a picture of the wood. I suggest taking a picture and going to a flooring store to ask for some advice. They will also be able to give you some good tips for refinishing these floors to make them look like new again.

    In this case, the person owned an older victorian style home with original wood floors that had damage.  he wanted to refinish them and repair the damaged pieces, but didn't know how to identify the species of wood used.  I hope you find this helpful!
