Question:

How can I file a complaint about a law enforcement officer who won't do his job because of personal reasons?

Someone broke into my house 6 months ago and stole about $3,000 of clothes, shoes, money, etc and admitted it to the Sheriff's Dept and the 'detective' who was supposed to do something about it. Turns out, he knows the persons family so he isn't doing anything! No getting my stuff back, no jail, no pressing charges, NOTHING. My neighbor even saw her doing it. I called the District Attorney, and he never filed the polie report so they couldnt do anything. I called the prosecutor, they cant do anything because it was out of city limits and said I had to call the District Attorney. I called a few lawyers but its a small town and just my luck, the ones I called are golf buddies with the detective so they wont help. I went to small claims and he was there on her side and said the case was still open and under investigation (this was 6 months after it happened) and so my case was denied till he closes it. Im all out of options, exhausted, frustrated, and enraged. At this point I have ZERO respect for every law enforcement officer because they are dishonest (at least in this town). ANY IDEAS PLEASE HELP!!!!

  1. Call your network affiliate news.  They love this stuff.

  2. Depending on your state, there will be some state level agency that oversees local LEOs.  Contact them, have as much backup data as possible and explain your case.  Depending on state law, they may be able to either force a change or take over the case and demand any evidence.

Your other option is a lawsuit against the police department, but to be brutally honest, unless you have hard proof, it will be a tough sell, and I wouldn't want to see how many tickets you start getting.

  3. Contact your state & Federal representatives for advise.

They can refer you to the proper people.

  4. Well, I don't blame the officer for not doing anything because he personally knows the people. It can create a conflict of interest. However, the proper thing to do would have been to hand it off to another detective or possibly agency to investigate.

Complain through the proper channels at the sheriffs department. If that doesn't get results, contact your local media or state attorney general's office.

  5. What state u live in?

  6. that is just WRONG! i now have lost respect in officers too! an officer SHOULD have been doing his duty no matter if it is family or not if i were you i would go down to the police station and DEMAND that his job is terminated immediatly and then call the state and make a HUGE scene out of it so the officer looks like a huge ***.
