Question:

How can I file financially independent for government aid?

I'm 22 and I have been financially independent since I was 17. Every time I apply for aid I always get audited for my parents tax info. Is there a way to apply for aid without having my parents on the application? I work and file my own taxes. The only thing my parents provide me with is a home and that's about it. Thanks...

  1. You are 22 you are not 17... If your parents can not claim you on their taxes then there is no problem... They should not be asking you this because you are over 21

I just got Financial Aid so I know the process well

  2. No.  Until you are 24, married, have kids you support, become a veteran or earn a bachelors degree and a couple more I can't remember right now, you HAVE to put your parents income information on the fafsa.

It doesn't matter where you live or who claims who on what tax forms or even that you support yourself.

PS: if you are living at your home you are not financially independent. lol

  3. You will need your parents tax info unless you are 25 or older.  I know it's stupid but those are the rules for federal financial aid. There is no way around it.

Also, you are not financially independent if your parents are providing you with a place to live.  Rent/mortgage and utility payments are usually a person's largest expense.
