Question:

How can I fill cracks in that are in my wood floors?

I live in an apt in NYC, and we recently have discovered a lot of centipedes running around. I've read up on it and hear that sealing off entry ways can help. Well, I've got a bunch of little cracks and holes all over the apt that might be making it easier for them to get in. Is there some way to fill these cracks in and get rid of my problem? Help!

  1. expanding foam sealer

  2. Hi, A good tip I picked up some years ago for filling in cracks and gaps was to mix pva glue with the saw dust from the same wood your filling!  A tip here when doing this is to bank up the filling because when it drys it will shrink back!  It wont stop the centipedes running around so guess you will need a insecticide for that one.

  3. expanding foam sealer will not work, there are a number of wood fillers and stain pens made by minwax so you can match your floors and they are available at most paint stores or home centers, that being said are you sure they are coming from your floors? usually centipedes come through plumbing and cracks near plumbing, check for cracks around your tub, sinks, cabinets, etc. and caulk them up but I'm afraid they're probably coming from the drains keep your drains plugged and spray, spray, spray

  4. They're not coming in through them. There is a solid subfloor underneath.  You can't do ANYTHING without landlord approval!

  5. Don't know for sure, but spend a lot of time in home improvement stores. . .someone's gotta back me up here. . .I thought there was something called "wood filler" . . .found near the paint section that is similar to spackling that would fill in those cracks. It will dry and harden. . . I have seen it at Home Depot and Lowes. . .probably available at most home improvement places but I don't know much about it.  I had a problem with spiders and bugs coming in and I bought the spackling b/c in my place, the walls were not in the best shape near the floor boards. . . I did spackling and it has helped A LOT so I would do anything to cover those holes.  It worked in my case.  Good luck.

    -additional-

Expanding foam sealer might not work. . . can expand too big, can end up being a mess.  I asked my dad about that and he advised against me using that product.  Something with a little more control, like a filler or spackler will look much nicer because you can control how much and where it goes.  Sorry, not trying to be rude.
