How can I filter isopropyl alcohol fumes in the air? It is used as a preservative for laboratory specimens.

  1. Charcoal. even activated charcoal is usually not sufficient to remove Isopropyl alcohol fumes from the atmosphere.

    For this reason, the use of a suitable RPE fitted with a combination charcoal or organic vapor cartridge is recommended, but only for short term use.

    A fume hood with external exhaust is the preferred method of dealing with volatile alcohol vapors.  The hood controls must be explosion and flameproof.

    For small specimens, the use of a glove bag or glove box is suitable.
