  1. Check with your local library, the nearest Science or History museum, local colleges or universities, and local Parks Dept.

All of these places have homeschooling groups involved with their programs in our area.

  2. Search on Yahoo Groups for secular groups in your area.

FWIW, even though I'm in several groups, relgion *rarely* comes up.  Even in our huge co-op, that is based on Christian codes of conduct, we have no relgion content in the classes.  That's because, even with the Christian religion, there's too much diversity.

However, I understand that if a group has a statement of faith you do not agree with, that can be a bit tricky.

Usually areas with a large HS'ing population will have at least one group (online or IRL) that is exclusive for all beliefs.  If not, then start one :-).

  3. I have found this really varies on your location.  I lived in one state where it seems everyone was ultra-religious, and now in one where the ultra-religious won't even associate with the rest of us.

I suggest you look for unschooling or eclectic groups.  Try searching yahoo groups for those terms in your area.  You can also try attachment parenting or natural parenting groups because they often wind up homeschooling.

If the only social groups are religious, you may want to go anyway.  So long as you aren't excluded, they are likely to be open minded about people with different beliefs.  You just need to keep an open mind too.

Best of luck to you :D

  4. Google "Secular homeschool (your area)"

You will probably get a bunch of hits, since there are so many people who don't want to be in a religion based support group.

I know in just my small area, there are three pretty good groups.

  5. http://www.thehomeschoolmom.com/states/

Here is a link to a site that lets you check for conventions in your area...they usually have links to the home school groups in your area...

    Good Luck!

  6. Not always an easy thing to do!

Most of the homeschool groups where we live are religious, but I don't let that stop us from joining in on the activities.  We go to many of the field trips, etc.

We just don't get involved in conversations regarding religion when we are with others in the group.  If someone starts to talk about religion, we just listen and don't say anything.  It's worked so far!
