Question:

How can I find Section 8 housing available in my area? Is there a listing site? Any tips?

It's so difficult to find landlords who will accept Sect 8 housing.

How can a very clean, responsible renter find housing? I can furnish excellent references. I just can't find decent housing...

Any suggestions?

  1. www.hud.gov.. left hand side.. rent.. follow the screen

  2. Visit buildings that take Sec 8 and ask if they are taking applications. Look for ads in smaller newspapers in town - part of the requirement is that they must place ads in the newspaper.

  3. What STATE are you in?

HUD varies on what State/County you are in.

  4. .   We have all asked this question for 30 years.  THere is no list.  You have to watch the ads for Sec 8.  If it is not in the ad, the landlord is 99% certain to not accept Sec 8.   Get to work.  You can find a place today.

  5. You may need to sell yourself before you ask about section 8.

Your "excellent references" need to be previous landlords, not your friends.    All friends give excellent references, sort of like your mother.

If you present yourself as desirable a landlord may be willing to sign up for section 8 (can be approved within 24 hours).    It will also depend on vacancy rates in the area, as section 8 limits how much the landlord can charge for rent and it is usually under the going rate.

  6. Your local Section 8 office has a list.

I myself no longer take section 8 for many, many reasons.

    Under market rent limits.

To many resident problems with section 8.
