How can I find a car that my dad owned in the 70's and 80's?

My dad owned a car in the 70s and 80s that he had to get rid of for financial reasons. It meant a lot to him and I'd like to find out who owns the car today. If i had the VIN number or license plate number from that time frame, is there a way to find out where the car is now?

Is there a way to get that VIN number or plate number if i actually don't have them on hand?

Has anyone found a car with circumstances similar to these?

Any other information would be great as I really have no idea how to go about this.

Thanks in advance.

  1. without the VIN it will be complicated if you could at least find the plate number this website might help.

    lost car registry

    http://www.lost-car-registry.com/

  2. try the DMV as unhelpful as they tend to be i bet its on record under his name somewhere. or maybe his old insurance company, just curious what kind of car is it?

  3. Without the VIN it will be hard to do. It would help to know what make, model and year of car we are talking about. If it is a collectible you would have a better chance by seeking out the clubs that specialize in that vehicle (Corvette, Mustang etc.) Since so much time has passed it is very possible the car has either been destroyed or sold and is nowhere near you any longer. Good luck.

  4. You could go to the DMV in the state where he had the car registered and have them pull up all the car's he had and maybe get the Vin number from there (your dad would most likely have to do this,,, "because it is in his name"... As they don't give out  other people's info you would probably have to do a title search on the Vin # Via the Internet or something..

    Good luck...
