Am looking for a lost relative. Have tried Ancestry, and most of the other sites. Do not want to have to pay for info that may not be correct or the right person.

  1. You didn't give any information on the person you were looking for so if the person is from the U.S., you can look up the name in the Social Security Index (it's free).  You can also look in vital records, cemeteries, probate records, church records, obituaries, the newspapers, military records, and bible records.

You can get help at your local family history center.  They have them in many of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day saint buildings.  You don't have to be a church member to use them and they wont try to convert you by going to their family history center.  You can also contact or get involved with your local genealogical society.

  2. UK answer.

The main problem here is knowing whether you have the right person if you don't know the time or place of death, unless you are researching a really unusual name, the chances of a successful search are slim to say the least.
