Look in the phone book. In Illinois we have Prairie Legal... they help people based on income. Look for something like that.

if you are in a union, you have most likely already paid for a lawyer through your dues and are entitled to representation. If not, you can check your local legal aide, who will probably be of very little assistance, or see if a local law school runs a clinic wherein law students will help you.

Some (and most) lawyers can give you a free initial consult. Legal aid is good, but not always the best.

Call the courthouse where you live, they can put your in contact with a legal aid service.
